What is the Skinny on Butter?

Published on 07/26/10

Good or Bad?

Growing up it was not rare for me to eat a spoonful of butter, spread butter on saltine crackers for a snack or eat a butter and white bread sandwich. My mom would buy the “tub butter” because it was “healthier” than the “real butter” our grandparents used. Little did she know, or other baby boomers at the time, that the plasticized margarine was full of hydrogenated oils called “trans fats” which are now labeled the most dangerous fats, not only elevating our bad cholesterol, but decreasing our good cholesterol.

What’s the real story on butter?

Butter has been around for thousands of years.

GET RID OF THE SCALE! Are you Self-Sabotaging?

Published on 06/30/10

I hate the scale! I mean I HATE IT! I lived so much of my life waiting to see the number that I thought defined “thin”. It was actually an unrealistic number for me but it was a number that I had read about in magazines, a number that was realistic according to the height/weight chart at the doctors and it just sounded so good as it rolled off my tongue. The scale dictated how I ate, how much I exercised and how good or bad I felt about myself. The scale ruled my self-esteem.

What is it about the number? I think it has to do with the bombardment we get from diets we are accustomed to. Daily and weekly weigh-ins is how popular diet programs measure their success. It doesn’t matter if you are building muscle, losing inches, feeling better or sleeping better…the scale determines if you have failed or succeeded.

There is a better way.

Teens and Weight

Breaking The Cycle

Recently I began doing some research into the problems facing teens and guess what is at the top of the list? WEIGHT ISSUES. It’s not a shock that teens are facing the same reality as we are as adults. In 2006, 18% of 12-19 year olds were considered overweight or obese. What is more staggering is that overweight adolescents have a 70% likelihood of being overweight adults. This is contributing to the staging statistic that 67% of adults are overweight. Our children and adolescents are leaning in the home what they will take into the “real world”. Their relationship with food and how they feel about themselves are going to drastically affect how they will interact with the world.

Only 2% of women view themselves as beautiful. 50-70% of NORMAL weight girls see themselves as OVERweight.

Sleep and Weight Issues

Published on 05/23/10

The Healthy Edge addresses many aspects of a healthy lifestyle. We address how to fit the necessities of health into crazy schedules, limited budgets and disgruntled spouses and kids. Another aspect that is sometimes overlooked, is the importance of sleep in releasing weight.

Let me begin with a story of one of my clients. Tina is a mom of three. Her two youngest children both have a rare genetic condition that has posed physical and mental challenges. Tina has dedicated her life to caring for her children. As she began The Healthy Edge program, she was making significant changes in her lifestyle. She was excited that she was noticing the difference in energy, focus and her mood. She definitely felt healthy. Her frustration was that, although she felt great, she was not noticing a significant amount of weight being released and there were days she felt RAVISHED even though she was eating every 2-3 hours and eating good portion sizes.
